We all get into ruts ever so often. It’s inevitable. That is not the problem. The problem is not having the agency to get yourself out of it.
It doesn’t matter why you got into that rut, the only person that can dig you out of it is yourself.
But its easier to get out of a rut than you think. As long as you build your Rut-Busting Toolbox
The Rut-Busting Toolbox
What is this Rut-Busting Toolbox you may ask? Its a bundle of activities that you know will near-unanimously put you into a better mood.
Actions that will put a pep in your step, a smile on your face, a sense of enthusiasm & action.
I have my toolbox, and it hasn’t failed me yet:
Have a conversation with a neighborhood abuelita
Chat with a stranger
Train Martial Arts
Sprint on the beach
Make a nice meal
Walk in nature
Play with an animal
Call a friend
Complete something, anything
Sometimes it takes just one of these to get me out of a rut. Sometimes it takes all of them. But I never leave these actions worse off than where I started.
You too can build this toolbox. Set aside 10 minutes and think about all your favorite activities. Ones that energize you, that get you cognitively stimulated. This is a starting point
Now think about some other potential options and go test them. Gather data & see which ones have the most profound mood-boosting effects.
