I spent the last three weeks taking literally grams of magnesium every day.
From the time I woke up to the time I went to bed, I was housing magnesium. Bathing in magnesium. Lathering myself in magnesium. Call me the magnesium man.
Ive been troubleshooting with magnesium for half a decade. Every form, every dose, every time of day. Its always been underwhelming.
This is the first time I actually got it right. It moved the needle in a way nothing else has, and it may be the missing link in your own protocol.
Lets get into it.
You Need More Magnesium Than You Think
Because modern life has turned us into magnesium burning machines.
Magnesium is involved in pretty much every biological process (upwards of 600 enzymatic reactions). ATP production, DNA synthesis, protein synthesis, nerve signaling, muscle contraction, Vitamin D activation, glutathione synthesis.
By any reasonable measure its one of the most important minerals in the human body.
Mg is the currency your body uses to do & make things. In order for your body to use ATP, it has to be bound to a magnesium molecule (MgATP). Without it you simply dont work as well.
And about half of Americans dont hit even the minimum estimated requirement. Not the optimal intake. The bare minimum.
Because of this, even a mild shortage hits systems across the board. Brain stops working, muscles are weaker, skin gets worse.
The RDA is around 420mg a day, but modern diets are magnesium poor. We dont eat many “real” foods, and the ones we do eat are grown in mineral depleted soil.

Stress burns through magnesium.
Stress burns magnesium, low magnesium makes you more susceptible to stress. This is the feedback loop most people are stuck in.
Magnesium is your nervous systems shock absorber. It helps you roll with the punches & manage stress without getting burnt out.
Without it your nervous system gets louder. Every sound is irritating, minor stressors become major triggers. Headaches, muscle tension & overstimulation all follow.
Why I Hypersaturated Myself With Magnesium
Because my nervous system was SHOT after mold.
I ground my teeth every night. Got overstimulated by every light, sound & general disturbance Too tired to work but too wired to relax.
I needed a deep nervous system reset. My operating system needed a reboot & that required true saturation. I was aware of magnesium’s role in nervous system regulation but never really noticed anything good at smaller doses. So I upped the dose. A lot.
Why Magnesium Hypersaturation May Be the Move
Simple really. Were not getting enough, were not absorbing enough & were burning through too much.
The standard RDA of 310-420mg was set based on the amount needed to prevent overt deficiency symptoms in a general population decades ago. NOT the amount needed to saturate tissue stores or buffer chronic stress load in a modern population.
Remember, our allopathic medicine model doesnt care about optimization. They care about you not dying & still being able to show up to work.
Labs lie. Serum magnesium reflects about 0.3% of your total body magnesium.
The body aggressively strips magnesium from bone & muscle to keep serum stable. You can be severely depleted at the cellular level with a perfectly in range serum reading.
Maintenance doses cant fill a deficit built over years of stress & poor diet. This is why people take their nightly magnesium religiously & never scratch the surface.
Remember, the RDA is for magnesium NEEDS. Not for correcting deficiency.
Magnesium is used en masse every day. It is not readily stored like fat soluble vitamins or even iron (stored in ferritin). It is used, it is distributed & it is in high demand.
A quick word on the “upper limit”
Google likes to say the Tolerable Upper Intake Level is 350mg/day for supplemental magnesium. That number is not a toxicity threshold. Its just the dose at which supplemental magnesium starts giving healthy people diarrhea.
Its a comfort ceiling. Split dosing, chelated forms & topical routes are exactly how you route around it, which is the entire design of this protocol.
Your kidneys are the actual safety valve. If yours dont work properly, skip to the bottom of this post before you do anything at all.
Why Hypersaturating > Megadosing
Notice I say “hypersaturation” instead of “megadosing.” Thats on purpose.
Magnesium absorption efficiency drops as the dose goes up. Roughly:
100mg = 40-70% absorbed
200mg = 35-60% absorbed
400mg = 25-50% absorbed
1,000mg = 10-30% absorbed
(Fractional absorption shifts with form, meal timing & how depleted you already are, so treat those as directional. The curve is the point, not the decimals.)
60% of a 100mg dose is 60mg absorbed. 20% of a 1,000mg dose is 200mg absorbed. The 1,000mg dose gets you about 3.3x more absorbed magnesium despite being 10x larger.
So big single doses are counterproductive. You absorb a smaller fraction & dramatically increase your odds of spending the afternoon in the bathroom.
Instead: three weeks of progressively higher SPLIT dosing, then a heightened maintenance dose, optimized for absorption.
Benefits of Magnesium Hypersaturation
Lowers anxiety at the receptor level. Magnesium acts as a blockade on the NMDA receptor, the main excitatory channel in your CNS. When magnesium is depleted, NMDA channels open at lower thresholds, which produces background anxiety, hypervigilance & an inability to relax.
The NMDA receptor is a primary target of a lot of my protocols for the simple reason that were all overstimulated af. The mechanism is similar to how ketamine works (NMDA antagonism), just more “natural.”
Which brings me to the thing I’ve wrestled with for like a decade:
Much of what you consider your personality may just be various nutrient deficiencies.
The short fuse. The noise sensitivity. The inability to sit in a quiet room without reaching for your phone. These are all common side effects of inadequate magnesium. Imagine being labeled as a “spaz” or a “grouch” for years when all you really needed was to truly replete your magnesium stores. Worth ruling out a mineral before you accept it as who you are.
GABA production support. Magnesium is a cofactor for glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD), the enzyme that converts excitatory glutamate into inhibitory GABA. Most of us are carrying way too much glutamate & not nearly enough GABA.
HPA axis regulation. Magnesium modulates cortisol at the hypothalamic, pituitary & adrenal levels. It supports the negative feedback loop that shuts the stress response off.
Without it you end up stuck in stress cycles that standard dosing cannot break.
Sleep architecture. Magnesium increases slow wave sleep, raises melatonin & reduces nighttime cortisol. Better sleep wont solve all your problems but good luck solving any problems without it.
Muscle relaxation & blood pressure. Magnesium acts as a natural calcium channel blocker, producing vasodilation & smooth muscle relaxation. Muscle cramps, jaw clenching & eye twitching are classic depletion signs.
Different Forms of Magnesium, Ranked
Not all magnesium is the same. Form determines bioavailability, GI tolerance & which tissue it actually reaches. My most & least favorite:
Magnesium Glycinate
My personal favorite. A magnesium molecule chelated onto glycine.
Best GI tolerance at high doses, high bioavailability, & the glycine carrier is itself an inhibitory neurotransmitter that supports sleep. If youre only buying one form, this is it.
This is the backbone of any loading protocol. 80%+ of all the magnesium I consume is glycinate.
I use Dead Sea Magnesium from Based Supplements (Im a part owner of the company, but thats why we dropped what I consider to be the best magnesium)
Best for: stress, sleep, daily supplementation, muscle tension.
Magnesium Taurate
Magnesium bound to taurine. The two work together to regulate nerve excitability, muscle contraction, heart rhythm & calcium entry into cells.
Best form for cardiovascular health & generally good for nervous system effects.
Best for: cardiovascular support, palpitations (get evaluated if theyre significant), stress with a cardiovascular component like a racing heart.
Magnesium L-Threonate
Really good on paper, honestly a little overrated.
Animal studies suggest it crosses into the brain more effectively, but its expensive, contains low elemental magnesium, & is not the tool for correcting whole body deficiency. I reserve it as a nootropic of sorts. It may also give you a headache.
Best for: cognitive goals, older adults interested in brain health, people specifically targeting brain magnesium.
Sucrosomal Magnesium
Instead of changing the molecule attached to the magnesium, this changes the delivery. The sucrosomal structure protects magnesium from interactions in the gut & improves uptake.
Great for people with severely impaired absorption. Everybody else is better off putting that money into more glycinate.
Magnesium Malate
Malic acid is a krebs cycle intermediate, which makes this the best magnesium for energy support. Good bioavailability, very reasonable price.
Magnesium Oxide (TRASH)
Roughly 4% bioavailability in the data Ive seen. A 500mg oxide capsule delivers about 20mg of usable magnesium.
Youre pretty much taking a laxative for no reason. Replace with glycinate expeditiously.
Topical Magnesium Chloride: Underrated
The claim that you absorb meaningful SYSTEMIC magnesium through your skin is not well supported. The studies people cite are small, uncontrolled, and frequently funded by the people selling the spray.
What IS real is the localized effect, & its noticeable. Muscle soreness, nagging injuries, restless legs.
Magnesium chloride’s small ionic size & high water solubility make it the best candidate for the route, & hair follicles & sweat glands are the likely entry point. I use it most days.

Reject branded oils. Buy a giant bag of magnesium chloride flakes & mix it with distilled water in a spray bottle. Costs about a tenth as much for the same thing.
